Why do decks in St. Louis County need cleaning more often than newer ones elsewhere?
Tree canopy. Much of the county — Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Ladue and the municipalities around them — sits under mature hardwoods that keep decks damp for days after rain. Mildew establishes in the grain during that damp window, and staining over it traps the problem instead of solving it. We wash and let the wood dry fully before any finish goes on, which is why a shaded deck takes longer to prepare than a sunny one.
My deck has been refinished several times over the years. Does that complicate things?
It changes the approach rather than ruling it out. Older homes across St. Louis County often carry decades of coating history, and what was used previously determines whether we can clean and recoat or need to strip back to bare wood first. We check that before quoting rather than discovering it mid-job.
